"There’s nothing else quite like a morganite; it fits into a unique part of the colour spectrum and I just adore those gorgeous peachy/bronze tones."

What is a Morganite?

Morganite is the peachy-pink to orange-bronze variety of the mineral beryl, which also includes emerald, aquamarine, and heliodor.

Despite being rarer than aquamarine, large cut stones of morganite are easily found in today's market. This is probably because Morganite is not as well known as other gems.

Where is Morganite Found?

Originally discovered in Madagascar in the early 20th century, Morganite can now be found in various parts of the world. The majority of morganite comes from pegmatite mines in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Afghanistan, Mozambique, Namibia, and the US supply limited and inconsistent quantities.

While it’s only a minor producer today, the original Madagascar deposit still sets the standard for the best material.

Hardness

With a hardness rating of 7.5 - 8, Morganites are quite tough, but still need to be treated with care and protected against knock and scratches.

Morganite forms elegant hexagonal prism crystals that tend to be flatter than aquamarine crystals. Some morganite crystals can be quite large, with specimens from Brazil weighing over 10 kg!

Myths & Legends

A relatively recent discovery, there’s not much folklore and legend surrounding Morganite. It has however, been referred to as the ‘Divine Stone of Love’ and is believed to attract love and strengthen relationships.

Colour

Morganite is the peachy-bronze to pink magenta variety of beryl, a mineral that also includes aquamarine and emerald. The intensity of the pink hue can vary from pale blush to a deeper rose making each Morganite completely unique.

In morganite, it is manganese that is primarily responsible for the gem’s characteristic warm peachy tones.

Pink Beryl

For many years Morganite was simply known as pink beryl. That was until the celebrated gemologist, George Frederick Kunz renamed it in honour of New York banker and avid gem collector J.P. Morgan.
