Engraving

Hand-engraving has become something of an unexpected speciality for us. I love how it transforms a piece, whether it’s an intricate pattern across an entire ring or simply a wee hidden detail that means the world to the person wearing it.

Unmistakably Human

Hand-engraving is an art in itself; like painting on metal with texture and depth.

It can be subtle or intricate; a softly textured surface, an entire pattern wrapped around a wedding ring, or the smallest detail hidden inside a ring.

No two hand-engraved pieces are ever the same; the imperfections are part of what makes each one individual.

Signature Engraved Wedding Rings

Wedding rings lend themselves particularly beautifully to engraving.Over the years we’ve developed a collection of our own hand-engraved designs.

Inspired by Scottish wildflowers and delicate fern fronds, Moira’s Signature engraved wedding rings are available in widths from 2mm to 6mm. Each is made to order and hand-engraved in Scotland by our Master Jeweller, giving every ring a character of its own.

Textured Finishes

Engraving is only one way we bring character to the surface of a piece. Brushed, hammered and deliberately worn finishes create depth and texture without feeling overly polished or pristine.

Personal Details

A small personal engraving is complimentary with every bespoke commission. This might be a significant date, a pair of initials or a simple symbol, discreetly placed inside a band or hidden within the design.

Bespoke Hand-Engraving

For bespoke commissions, engraving can form part of the design from the very beginning. Moira works with each client to develop a pattern, motif or hidden detail inspired by something personal.

The design is created for the individual piece before being translated by hand onto the finished jewellery by our Master Jeweller.

FAQs

What is hand engraving?

Hand engraving is the process of cutting a design directly into the surface of metal using traditional engraving tools. Unlike a mechanically repeated pattern, every mark is made individually by hand, giving the finished piece its own subtle character.

Can I commission an engraved wedding ring if I haven't worked with you before?

Yes. Our Signature Textures and Signature Engraved Wedding Rings are available to new and existing clients and can be made to order in a range of precious metals, widths and proportions.

Do you offer fully bespoke engraved wedding rings?

We do, although fully bespoke engraved wedding rings are currently reserved for existing clients. These designs are developed individually and require considerably more design and workshop time than our established Signature engraving.

If you are new to the studio, our Signature engraved designs offer a selection of established patterns and textures that can still be made to order specifically for you.

Can you engrave a date, initials or personal message?

Yes. Small personal details such as dates, initials, words and symbols can be incorporated into many of our pieces. We recommend discussing engraving with us when ordering so that it can be considered as part of the piece from the beginning.

How much does engraving cost?

The cost depends on the complexity and extent of the engraving. A small personal detail requires considerably less time than a fully hand-engraved surface, so we will confirm the price once we understand what you have in mind.

Does hand engraving make every ring slightly different?

Yes. our Signature engraved designs follow an established pattern or texture, but because each is engraved individually by hand there will always be small variations. We see these differences as part of the character of the piece.

Can you engrave jewellery made elsewhere?

We only offer engraving for jewellery made by Moira Patience, allowing the design, metal and placement of the engraving to be properly considered by our workshop.
