What is a Fancy Colour Diamond?

Fancy colour diamonds are natural diamonds that display a noticeable colour. Unlike traditional diamonds, which are graded from D to Z based on how colourless they are, fancy coloured diamonds are prized because of their vibrant tones.

These extremely rare diamonds come in a spectrum of colours including yellow, pink, champagne, brown, green, blue, grey and even red.

Where are Fancy Colour Diamonds Found?

Only one in ten thousand diamonds has a fancy colour - these extremely rare gems are found around the world, with some regions known for particular hues:

Yellow and pink diamonds have been found in South Africa and Australia.

Champagne and cognac diamonds have been sourced from the Argyle mine (now closed) in Western Australia.

Grey diamonds can be found in India, Russia, and Africa.

Like all diamonds, fancy colour diamonds rank 10/10 on the Mohs scale – the highest possible. This makes them an excellent choice for engagement rings and everyday fine jewellery.

Unlike colourless diamonds, where the absence of colour is most valuable, fancy diamonds become more desirable as their colour becomes more vivid.

Yellow Diamonds are bright and joyful and they pair beautifully with yellow gold.

Champagne Diamonds have gorgeous soft, earthy tones ranging from pale gold to deep cognac.

Pink Diamonds are exceptionally rare and feel romantic with gentle rosy tones.

Grey Diamonds offer a misty, silvery tone that feels elegant and understated.

Yellow Diamonds

Yellow diamonds are one of the most vibrant and sought-after fancy colours. Their sunny, golden tones range from soft lemon to rich canary.

Natural yellow diamonds look especially striking in yellow gold settings, which enhance their warmth and glow.

Champagne Diamonds

Champagne diamonds are a beautiful alternative to traditional white diamonds. Their colour ranges from pale gold to rich toffee, often with a glowing, understated warmth.

Sourced mostly from the now-closed Argyle mine in Australia, their availability is limited, making them all the more special.

Grey Diamonds

Grey diamonds are misty and understated. Their cool, silvery tones can feel soft and smoky or dramatic and steely, depending on the light and the individual stone.

Not to be confused with salt & pepper diamonds, which are prized for their visible inclusions and speckled appearance, fancy grey diamonds are valued for their even tone and subtle transparency.

Myths & Legends

Coloured diamonds have long been associated with royalty and rarity. The famous pink diamond worn by Queen Elizabeth II and the stunning yellow Tiffany Diamond are two of the most iconic examples.

In ancient India, coloured diamonds were believed to hold special powers depending on their colour – yellow for wisdom, pink for love, and brown for grounding energy.
