"Forged within the Earth over billions of years, a natural diamond is more than just a gemstone; it's a stunning reminder of the power of nature"

MOIRA PATIENCE

What is a Diamond?

A natural diamond is a crystal composed of pure carbon, formed deep within the Earth’s mantle under extreme heat and pressure.

These rare and remarkable gemstones have been treasured for centuries, admired for their brilliance, strength, and mega sparkle.

Where are Diamonds Found?

Natural diamonds are found in select locations worldwide, with the largest deposits in Russia, Botswana, Canada, and Australia.

Each region produces diamonds with unique characteristics, influenced by geological conditions. Some diamonds are also recovered from riverbeds and ocean floors, where they've been transported by natural erosion over millions of years.

Hardness

As the hardest known natural material on Earth, diamonds rank 10 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness and are 58 times harder than anything else in nature.

This exceptional durability makes them ideal for everyday wear, particularly in engagement rings and heirloom pieces. Their resistance to scratches ensures they maintain their brilliance for generations.

Myths & Legends

Throughout history, diamonds have been associated with strength, invincibility, and even divine power.

The ancient Greeks believed diamonds were tears of the gods, while in Indian mythology, they were thought to be formed by lightning strikes.

Colour

Diamonds are traditionally graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow), with colourless stones being the rarest and most highly prized.

While we still offer classic white diamonds, we’re particularly drawn to unusual tones and antique cuts that bring unique character to a piece.

Natural diamonds also occur in an extraordinary range of colours - from soft champagne and vivid yellow to pink, blue, green, and even super rare red.

Natural Vs Lab-grown

At Moira Patience, we exclusively work with natural diamonds - responsibly sourced or antique and old-cut.

While lab-grown diamonds share the same chemical properties, natural diamonds carry a history and rarity that cannot be replicated in a factory.

To understand the differences further, read Moira's Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds article.

Old Mine Cut & Antique Diamonds

We love working with old mine-cut and antique diamonds for their unique beauty and character.

These diamonds, originally cut by hand, offer a warmth and twinkle that’s hard to replicate with modern cuts. Their slightly irregular facets and deep, intricate shape create a soft, romantic sparkle that adds character and history to the piece.
