Pearl
Gem Index - Pearl
"Formed by a living organism rather than deep within the earth, pearls have this magical lustre that seems to glow from within."
MOIRA PATIENCE
What is a Pearl?
Pearls begin their journey within oysters and mussels when a tiny particle becomes trapped inside the shell.
As a natural defence mechanism, the mollusc coats the irritant with layer upon layer of nacre. Over time these layers build up to form a pearl.
Natural pearls occur entirely by chance and are exceptionally rare. Most pearls used in fine jewellery today are cultured pearls, grown using the same natural process with careful human intervention.

Where are Pearls Found?
Today, most fine pearls are cultured in carefully managed farms around the world.
South Sea pearls are primarily found in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, while Tahitian pearls are cultivated in French Polynesia. Freshwater pearls are commonly produced in China.
Each region produces pearls with distinctive colours, sizes and characteristics
Hardness & Care
Pearls are considerably softer than most gemstones and benefit from gentle care.
Perfume, cosmetics and household chemicals can damage their surface over time. We recommend storing pearl jewellery separately from harder gemstones and wiping it gently after wearing to preserve its natural lustre.
Myths & Legends
Throughout history, pearls have been associated with wisdom, purity and protection.
Ancient cultures believed pearls were tears shed by the gods, while others thought they were formed from moonlight captured within the sea. Their rarity and beauty made them symbols of wealth and status for centuries.
Pearl Colours
Pearls occur in a remarkable range of colours.
Classic white and cream pearls remain timeless favourites, while silver, golden and black pearls offer a more distinctive character. Many pearls also display subtle overtones of pink, green, blue or violet depending on the light.
Baroque Pearls
Perfectly round pearls are often considered the most traditional, but I'm frequently drawn to baroque pearls.
Their irregular shapes are created naturally and no two are ever the same. The finest examples can display extraordinary lustre, movement and personality; qualities that make them particularly interesting to design with.
Some of my favourite pearl commissions have featured baroque pearls chosen specifically for their individuality.
