Where do Opals come from?
Australia is the primary source of opals, with the famous Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy mines producing some of the most valuable and sought-after opals in the world. Other sources include Mexico, Brazil, and Ethiopia.
Hardness
With a hardness rating of 5 - 6.5, Opal is a relatively soft gem and must be handled with care. We usually use a bezel setting to help protect the stone from knocks and scratches. It’s also best to clean opal with a soft, damp cloth and avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures.
How is Opal formed?
Opal is formed when silica-rich water seeps into rock crevices and solidifies over time. The play-of-color in opal is caused by the diffraction of light as it passes through the silica spheres within the stone.
Myths & Legends
In ancient times, opal was believed to possess mystical powers and bring protection to those who wore it. The Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all gemstones and the Bedouins believed that opals contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms.
